When Baby Comes Out

by Chris
(Brunswick County NC)

My daughter was born in 04 at the time my girl friend and I had a good relationship. In 06 we married and our journey began, well 08 she decided she wasn't happy and she left, was served with papers and i payed for a lawyer and started the process, I wouldn't let her affect me she got in my job everything than the day came my lawyer told me she is making claims I am not dad and I needed to take a DNA test, well couple days before Christmas came and the dreaded news , well we ended up getting back together my little girl who tells everyone i am her daddy are back together, the biological father has stepped up but no paper work has been done he volunteers to pay 300 child support supply insurance, well a few moths ago she decided to leave again "ya know the same old thing" well shes on temp disability receiving weekly payments plus the child support she goes to DSS and applies for Medicaid and Medicare, well my first letter from DSS they want me to sign all my rights away custodial and visitation after talking with them I told them have no problems putting natural father on birth cert but not signing my rights away, her mother did this and it will devastate me and Kenzie, well now they are coming after me for child support, I have to pay for a lawyer while they fight her fight I have no problems paying child support but she will be bringing more money home a month than i do and I have a problem being a man I wont qualify for state help but she will still get it, Yes that is what the LADY from DSS stated, Not being the natural father do I have rights or anything

Child Support Questions
by: Child Support America Team Member

Dear Chris,

Unless you legally adopt the child, you do not have any rights. I know that is hard to hear but true. Even if the natural father is in her life and is legally financially responsible for her, will they allow you to still be in her life?
