What Does Child Support Pay For

by Suzette
(Summit County)

My husband has full custody of both of his children. His ex-wife left them when they were small and he was awarded full custody at the time of their divorce. She pays child support only when she has to and her wages are garnished. She has arrearages of over $4000. She often will claim that because she pays 50% of her paycheck, that she is entitled to us paying for certain things for her....ie;portrait packages from school, daycare if she needs it while they are in her custody, etc. We have almost always sent over clothing to her house for the children for their weekend trips, but recently, money is very tight.

We told her that she would have to supply her own clothing for the children while they are at her home. She said that she is owed that because she pays child support, but we believe that is her responsibility and we were just doing it to be nice. Can you please tell me 1)who is correct and 2)what does and doesn't child support pay for-what do we have to pay for while the children are in her custody every other weekend?
Thank you!

Hello Suzette,

Many non-custodial parents don't understand that child support covers any child or household expenses. This includes rent, electric, gas, food, clothes ect.

Unless the NCP can prove that the CP is using the money illegally, nothing can be done. So to answer your question, your husbands ex is wrong!

You and your husband don't owe her anything when the children are in her care. If you guys want to be nice and help that's one thing, but their is no obligation on your end.

We know it's hard for the NCP to understand this, but that's the way it is.

Other than the child support issue, is there a good relationship between all of you, and is the ex a good parent to the kids.

Thanks,
CSA STAFF
