Stopping child support due to death of payee

My minor son was living with my ex husband, and my ex husband passed away and my son is now living with me. I was paying child support to my ex husband. I contacted child support office, and they said I needed an attorney to file a petition to stop the support order - this is going to cost me $500 - $750 - is there a way I can file this paperwork with the court myself?

You can file a motion for modification yourself.

Local Clerk of Court usually has the papers needed.

Put on the paperwork that you are seeking termination of support due to death of CP. And mention you now have custody.

Attach copy of death certificate.

Judge should be able to stop support order.
