Owning Up To My Child Support Responsibilities

by Dontrell
(Saint Robert, Missouri)

About two ad a half years age I was dealing with this woman. Initially i didn't know that the woman was married. She was separated from her husband and I had never known differently. Will it comes to find out that she was married but had filed for divorce and in the state of North Carolina you have to be separated for a year before the divorce is final.

Well in the process she became pregnant. Unsure of who was exactly the father I denied parental responsibility for a year. After which I was served with child support papers. I then requested a paternity test and was indeed found to be the father. I fully accept my responsibilities and want to be involved in her life as much as possible.

My issue though is that I am in the military and in a different state. The state that she resides in has determined that I will pay $820.00 a month for support since she is unemployed(I must assume 100% responsibility). This is ok but yet provides an inconvenience. I am married with no children but the child support takes away 30% of my income.

Plus she will only allow for supervised visitation at my expense. She will not assist in visitation but won't prevent it also. Is there a way that I can get that support reduced to a more reasonable amount and more rights with my daughter?

Hi Dontrell,

YES! You will need to request for a modification to lower payments. Also, you should file for court ordered visitation and fight to see your child. Without a court order you have no rights. Seek legal advice. Have you had any contact with your daughter?

If you are in the military there should be many means of support for you legally. Talk to your c.o. I think it is reat that you are owning up to the responsibility. Too many fathers don't.
