Not Just A Paycheck I Want My Fathers Rights

by Jamie Flade
(Salt Lake City, Utah)

I have a situation in aurora Colorado with a young lady who says I fathered her child. The child is now 1 year old and I do not doubt that he is my son. I would like to establish paternity and submit to the courts an agreed upon parenting plan. I need to know how to go about this, where to send a letter and so on. Can you help? I want to be a part of this child's life and not just a paycheck.

Do you have a case open
by: Child Support America Team Member

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for your post, and we thank you for stepping up to be a real man for your child. Do you have a open child support case as of yet?

not just a paycheck
by: Jamie

I do not have a case open as of yet. I am trying to do so. I know my first step is to establish paternity and make a request with the court/ state for mediation. That is what I would prefer to do. I want to make sure that my rights as the father are established and protected. Trying to find out who I contact is where I am having difficulties.

Check with your CSEA

You should check with your local csea. They may have a paternity testing program. If not you can at least ask them what your next step would be to have a dna test done.

not just a paycheck

I am in Utah and the mother and Child are in Colorado. Should I still contact my CSE here? This is where I am confused. I want to establish paternity and then request a court appointed mediator so the mother and I can come up with a parenting plan. I feel like this is important. Or, should I contact the Colorado CSE? Again, this is where I am struggling.
