Medical Coverage When Paying Child Support
(Florida)
I have been paying child support for 17 years and have 10 months to go before the child graduates. I have been served with a court order to now provide medical insurance after all these years. I lost my job, took another job at half the salary and cannot afford the $300 to insure a child in another state from where I live. My wife makes sure the child support is paid even if my employer does not code the support correctly and it causes my account to be in arrears, we will send the money again so that the support in not in the arrears. I have had 2 past employers not put the ID on payments causing me to have to pay again even though it was not my fault.
I do believe the child has had medical coverage either with his mom or his step dad, otherwise we would have provided it. Of all times now we have to pay medical that the child most likely will never use. How is this fair to the non-custodial parent, which in this case is the dad. It may be the law, but it is an unfair law especially if the child already has medical that is not state funded. Had there not been medical coverage we would have paid it from the beginning. Now is not a good time financially for us to have to pay additional money especially when me and my wife both have medical issues. The law needs to be decided on a case by case basis. I know there are parents that do not pay child support much less medical. The child lives in GA, I live in FL.
