Marrying Someone Who Owes Back Child Support

The man I want to marry owes back child support and at this time not working. I will be graduating pretty soon as a nurse, would the state be able to interfere with my income? I live in Chicago,IL.

Back Child Support
by: Child Support America Team Member

No the state cannot interfere with your income because of his back support. BUT, after you two get married if you have a joint checking account together and the state puts a lien on your husband, then they can deduct money from your joint account, seize personal property etc. If he continues to owe back support it would be wise to keep separate accounts and keep vehicles in your name. Does he owe a large amount of back support?
