Is Child Support Based Where Child Lives

by Kathy
(PA)

My x-husband moved from PA to Nassau,Bahamas in January. We have a 12 year old son. I believe it is his father's intention to get him down there for a visit and never return him. Since the very beginning of our separation and divorce, he has been trying to get my children away from me (we also have a 19 year old) to avoid having to pay child support and make me pay him.

We currently have a court order from PA in place where he is responsible to pay nearly $800/month plus a medical balance arrears. He is currently over $5000 in arrears. Should my 12 year old decide that "life is better in the Bahamas" and choose to stay there, would a new support order be written from the Bahamas or here in PA? Where can I find information on child support calculations in the Bahamas?

Hi Kathy,

Yes a child support order is established in the state and or country where the child resides. You can look online for the information to the Bahamas child support. Does your ex have a visitation order?

Thanks

Thanks for responding. I was unable to find anything online when I was looking for info on how a support order is determined in the Bahamas. I'll keep looking unless you can direct me to a sight that would help.

The existing visitation order is the one that's been in place for several years, before my x moved to the Bahamas (this past January). He never made any attempt to seek a change in that order prior to leaving or since he's been there. My son wanted to go for a visit this summer so we just came to a verbal agreement for him to go from 7/10-8/14. I'm not sure what the expectation is going to be for the holidays this year-I guess we'll wait and see.
