I Don't Owe Any Back Child Support
In The year 2004 my husband and I separated for a period of approximately three months. During our brief separation my husband applied for public assistance (food stamps). During the interview he was advised to apply for child support or else he couldn't receive benefits for our daughter.
So, he did and at the time I didn't know anything about it. Three months later we reunited. One year after that, I received a court order demanding child support for my daughter.
I was very angry and upset about the situation, and I immediately got a hold to my husband. I had him call the child support agency, to explain the situation and tell them to take me off of child support. I dialed the number for him and sat right beside him during this call, to make sure it was done. I actually heard him say "I don't want her on child support because we're back together again."After that I thought that was the end of it. Well, last summer I was pulled over for driving with a broken taillight (not my vehicle). It was then that I learned that my license was suspended due to delinquent child support.
I was never notified by the dept. of revenue or the department of motor vehicles. I had been driving around the state of Florida for almost two years with a suspended license and didn't even know it. I’m just fortunate that I didn't have any accidents. Can you imagine how upset I was? I was totally disgusted and I still am. I wasn't able to renew my license because of this insane misunderstanding.
I do not now, nor have I ever owed child support. My husband and I both take good care of our children. I can't even begin to articulate how disgusted I am. How is it, that unbeknownst to me, I was being charged for child support for which I never owed in the first place, and was never notified of a license suspension? Also how is it that my husband was so ill advised to file for child support in order to receive benefits?
How is it that a married person who shares custody can file for child support with no questions asked and no proof of anything? I need to know what to do and how to do it? I want to know why no action was taken by the child support agency after my husband made the phone call requesting termination of child support. I could have been arrested for driving without a license. I would understand if I was a non supportive parent, but this is certainly not the case.
