Do you have issues with BACK Child Support?
The term back child support is better known as arrears or arrearages. If someone is in the arrears, it simply means they are behind in regular monthly payments. When someone is behind in their child support obligation, it can cause problems for everyone involved. For starters, it affects the custodial parent because they may not be able to fully attend to the child’s financial needs. Also having arrearages can have some uncomfortable consequences for the non-custodial parent as well.
Some people are in the arrears for reasons beyond their control. They may have lost their job, or been affected by an illness. If this is the case, the best thing to do is to stay in good contact with your case worker. Always inform them of your situation. Another rule of thumb is to try to mail some type of payment in each month even if it’s $10 dollars a month. This shows good faith, and also says that you are not being totally neglectful. This small action can help you in the long run if you are ever charged with contempt. Certain case workers and judges may have mercy on your situation simply because you attempted to do what’s right.
Some consequences for owing back support are as follows:
- You can be charged with contempt of your child support order.
- If you owe $2,500 or more your passport can be suspended.
- You can have your drivers license suspended.
- You can have your fishing license suspended
- You can have your hunting license revoked.
- You will be considered a dead beat dad.
- You can be sentenced to jail.
- You can receive a fine.
Would you like to learn various child support terms? Check out our Definitions page for details.
Our last piece of advice may seem silly, but we will share this information with you anyway. If you have a decent relationship with the custodial parent you can ask them to forgive your back child support. The term forgive means to wave all of your arrearages. This will bring you current, and would be a huge benefit. Believe it or not it does happen. Forgiving arrears is a miracle of grace not to be taken lightly. Some non-custodial parents owe thousands of dollars in arrears, so forgiveness of back child support is a true blessing.

In The News................
Actress: Anne Heche
Anne Heche, and ex- husband Coley Laffoon agree to child support terms. Less than one month after she sought a reduction in child support payments, actress Anne Heche appears to have gotten her wish. People reports that Anne and her ex-husband Coley Laffoon reached a divorce settlement Friday afternoon that calls for the 39-year-old actress to pay $3,700 per month in child support for their 6-year-old son Homer. Anne had initially been paying $15,000 per month in child support; Coley has had primary physical custody of their son since the couple separated early last year.
The settlement agreement also calls on Anne to make a one-time, lump-sum payment to Coley in the amount of $275,000. She will additionally be responsible for 75-percent of Homer’s private school tuition, and the couple will split the "agreed upon" costs associated with Homer’s extracurricular activities, 50-50.
So you see, it is not only men who are in the news for paying Child Support!!
